To promote The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Jack Black dressed up as Bowser and things got nutty.
This probably happened out of an abundance of caution on NBC’s part.
Presumably NBC could have been fined if Black’s coin purse was actually exposed to the audience.

The screenplay was written by The Lego Movie 2’s Matthew Fogel.
Shigeru Miyamoto, who created Mario, is a producer on the film.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is expected to do big business at the box office.
